How does the German Working Holiday Program work?
The Working Holiday Visa Program aims to enable young people between 18 and 30 to gain an insight into the culture and daily life in Germany. With the German Working Holiday visa you can travel and work in the country for a period up to 12 months.


Can I apply for a German Working Holiday visa?
To be eligible for the Working Holiday Program to Germany you must:

  • be aged between 18 and 30 inclusive)
  • hold an eligible passport (from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or Japan)
    *Be advised that Visa First can organize the German Working Holiday visa only for Australian and New Zealand passport holders residing in Australia, Ireland or the United Kingdom
  • be in good health
  • not be accompanied by children
  • must provide proof of sufficient funds (at least €250 (~AUD 400) for each month of your stay in Germany



How long should my passport be valid for when applying for the visa?
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay in Germany.


What documents are accepted to prove sufficient funds?
Evidence of funds may be in form of credit cards, copies of bank statements or an official sponsorship declaration with proof of income of your sponsor.


How long is the German Working holiday visa valid for?
The Working Holiday visa is valid for 12 months.


When will my visa start?
The visa will start from the date stated on the application form as entry date.


Is the visa valid in other country?
The Working Holiday visa allows you to stay and work in Germany only.


How long will my visa take to process?
Applications for Working Holiday Visas are usually processed within 1-2 weeks, not including postal delivery and provided that no further documents have to be requested. These figures may, however, vary from case to case, and we assume no responsibility for applications handed in too close to an intended flight date.


Do I need a separate work permit to be able to work in Germany?
The Working Holiday Visa will already include the Work Permit for Germany.


How much does the German Working holiday visa cost?
The price including embassy and processing fee is AUD 250.


How will my visa look like?
The German Working Holiday visa will be a label placed in your passport. Once you have obtained your visa please check carefully that all entries are correct and in accordance with your application. You should inform the Embassy’s Visa Section immediately of any mistakes.


How long can I work for on the German Working Holiday visa?
You can work for the entire 12-month period. There are no restrictions on the period of employment as long as the maximum 12 months stay is not breached.


What kind of job I can undertake on the Working Holiday visa?
You can work whatever you like as long as you don’t exceed the allowed 12-month period.


Can I apply for another Working Holiday visa to Germany?
No. You can apply for this Working Holiday visa only once in a lifetime.


Can I apply for another type of visa in Germany?
You may apply to extend your residence permit or alter its character (e.g. to study or work for a longer period) by filling the appropriate application with the competent Immigration Department in Germany.


What if I have some medical conditions? Will I be required to undergo any medical examinations?
No medical examinations will be required. If they are needed your employer will ask you for such.


If I have a conviction will this affect my application?
If your conviction was recorded in Australia this will not affect your application. If you have a conviction from another country apart from Australia the German database will automatically cancel your application.
